Nueva York.- Nueva York dio anoche la bienvenida a la Navidad con el encendido de las luces del tradicional árbol que cada año preside el Rockefeller Center de Manhattan, en una ceremonia de dos horas que contó con la presencia de varias estrellas de la canción como Kylie Minogue, Sheryl Crow y Mariah Carey, entre otras.Esas conocidas cantantes fueron algunos de los rostros famosos que se pasaron por una gala que abrió la cantante Jessica Simpson y en la que tampoco faltaron Annie Lennox, Boyz II Men ni Susan Boyle, quienes, así como la estrella infantil Jackie Evancho, cantaron temas navideños para celebrar la iluminación del tradicional abeto.
Con la música de esos artistas y otros más se amenizó la espera de las miles de personas que se agolparon en el céntrico Rockefeller Center de Manhattan para vivir un año más el que es uno de los momentos más especiales de la Navidad neoyorquina y que se llevo a cabo con altas medidas de seguridad.
UN SÍMBOLO EN ESTAS FIESTAS
La llegada del impresionante abeto a ese punto de la ciudad y su encendido marca el inicio de las fiestas navideñas en la Gran Manzana y reúne cada año a turistas y neoyorquinos que se acercan a ver el resplandor de las 30.000 luces que decoran el famoso árbol, de casi 23 metros de altura y más de diez toneladas de peso.
Gracias a ocho kilómetros de cable eléctrico, el árbol, de alrededor de 75 años, se iluminó hasta el 7 de enero las navidades neoyorquinas.
En esta ocasión, el tradicional abeto navideño procede de la propiedad particular de un miembro del cuerpo de Bomberos de Nueva York, Peter Acton, cuyo jardín está poblado por quince variedades de árboles.
El ejemplar fue talado el pasado 11 de noviembre y llegó a Nueva York un día después, cuando fue instalado ante la pista de patinaje sobre hielo del Rockefeller Center.
Además de las múltiples luces que visten este ejemplar noruego, el árbol está coronado por una estrella compuesta por 25.000 cristales de Swarovski que deslumbra a los transeúntes con doce rayos de luz en movimiento y que sirve para poner el broche de oro al símbolo navideño de la Gran Manzana.
